Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

July 17, 2015 by predominantlypaleo 82 Comments

I really shouldn’t even write an intro for this one – this is seriously barely a recipe. I mean it’s definitely worth posting because who doesn’t want an easier method for hard boiling eggs?! Right? But this is so crazy easy I should just stop. typing. now… Oh but I have to mention that since using this method, my eggs peel so easily that I no longer dread the process. Now THAT is a major accomplishment. Plus one of my favorite lunches ever is scooping egg salad onto avocado oil potato chips and now I can whip it up in no time. Thank you Instant Pot <- straight up infomercial style. Okay okay here it is y’all, Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs! Ingredients:

  • Pasture raised eggs (see how easy it is already?)
  • 1 cup water
  1. Plug in your Instant Pot
  2. Pour one cup water in the bottom of the stainless bowl
  3. Place in a stainless strainer/steamer basket (there is one that comes with the IP or you can use one like this)
  4. Place your desired number of eggs on top of the opened steamer basket
  5. Put the lid on
  6. Power on and press the MANUAL button
  7. With the “+/-” button adjust it to 6-8 minutes on the display
  8. Close and lock the lid and make sure the vent on top is closed
  9. Let the IP do its magic and then do the quick release valve
  10. Let cool slightly and vent completely before opening lid
  11. Transfer eggs to fridge or allow to cool slightly before eating right away

Thank you! I have an IP but haven’t used it for boiled eggs for fear I’d blow up a mess. I’ve been hauling out the old stovetop pressure cooker for tried and true boiled eggs. They really are so fast and easy to peel! Tomorrow I will use the IP with confidence. See – you really did need to write this recipe out – for at least one person.

Have you ever tried baking eggs? They turn out perfect and I make them all the time for ease. The shell comes off really well too. I tend to do double sided spiced eggs that have nut butter and cinnamon on one side and paprika and salt on the other side.

    Hey Jen,
I use the Aussie version of Instant Pot – I don’t think there’s a manual button, so can you tell me, is this 8 minutes on high pressure or some other setting? Does my Q make sense?! Hope so 🙂

I followed your instructions and it worked like a charm. For mine the yolks became really hard. Still edible but it took a sharp knife and a little umph to break them up.

The size of the eggs might make a difference too (yolk size included). I haven’t experienced the hard yolks issue yet but maybe you could reduce the time and transfer them to cold water afterwards right away.

I tried it for the first time today. Most cracked but it may be because they were stacked pretty closely together because of the small collendar I used to fit in the pot. Will try to flatten them out next time.

I had that happen a time or two, I think it might have to do with the age of the eggs? But I cannot say for sure and have not had them consistently crack on me.

The eggs were awesome! The yolk was a beautiful lemon yellow in color – no green ring – and felt velvety smooth in my mouth. So tender. They peeled like a dream. I will never cook my eggs any other way. This was even better than the egg steamer I bought a few years back. I cooked my eggs for 6 minutes on low pressure in the IP DUO 60. Thanks so much!

Eight minutes is too long. I did mine for five minutes and they were perfect-yellow yolk with just the tiniest hint of green on the outside. Any longer they would have been way overdone. I used jumbo eggs.

The steam feature is an automatic high pressure for 10 minutes. If you choose manual you can select high or low pressure and you can choose how long to cook for. You can also change the time on the steam feature but the default is 10 minutes. Does that help?

I tried recipe today with the Instant Pot using 10 white eggs. After peeling I found that all of the egg white had turned brown. The eggs were not cracked. It was so disgusting looking (not at all white like they should be) I threw them out. Any ideas what happened? They were fresh, cage free eggs, grain fed.

My first time at pressure boiling the eggs turned out perfect. This batch, the whites are a definite, light brown! Is it because I used brown shelled eggs? The first batch I made was with white shelled eggs, (did a full dozen) the second batch was 18 brown shelled eggs. They TASTE fine, but not pretty to look at nor is the appearance appetizing.

Jennifer, you became my new favorite person today! I’ve been trying to do some low carb days and I love to have deviled eggs. I made some the other night using the stove method and it was (as usual) such a pain in the butt. Plus the peeling process is always a nightmare. I’d read somewhere about people using their Instant Pot for hard boiling eggs so I googled it and found your site. I sadly under utilize my Instant Pot but at least I have it when I need it.

I followed your directions and they came out perfectly! And it was so easy! I work from home so I just set it up and left it and when I could get back to the kitchen, took them out and dunked them in ice water. No worrying about boiling water, then covering and setting a timer, etc.

And the peeling – OMG it was indeed a snap! I peeled 6 eggs in probably less than half the time it would take me to peel ONE egg from my usual way. And the eggs taste great!

I’ll definitely be browsing through your site for other recipes! Thanks again for helping fix such a big cooking frustration!
