I really shouldn’t even write an intro for this one – this is seriously barely a recipe. I mean it’s definitely worth posting because who doesn’t want an easier method for hard boiling eggs?! Right? But this is so crazy easy I should just stop. typing. now… Oh but I have to mention that since using this method, my eggs peel so easily that I no longer dread the process. Now THAT is a major accomplishment. Plus one of my favorite lunches ever is scooping egg salad onto avocado oil potato chips and now I can whip it up in no time. Thank you Instant Pot <- straight up infomercial style. Okay okay here it is y’all, Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs! Ingredients:
- Pasture raised eggs (see how easy it is already?)
- 1 cup water
- Plug in your Instant Pot
- Pour one cup water in the bottom of the stainless bowl
- Place in a stainless strainer/steamer basket (there is one that comes with the IP or you can use one like this)
- Place your desired number of eggs on top of the opened steamer basket
- Put the lid on
- Power on and press the MANUAL button
- With the “+/-” button adjust it to 6-8 minutes on the display
- Close and lock the lid and make sure the vent on top is closed
- Let the IP do its magic and then do the quick release valve
- Let cool slightly and vent completely before opening lid
- Transfer eggs to fridge or allow to cool slightly before eating right away
Dale says
Thank you! I have an IP but haven’t used it for boiled eggs for fear I’d blow up a mess. I’ve been hauling out the old stovetop pressure cooker for tried and true boiled eggs. They really are so fast and easy to peel! Tomorrow I will use the IP with confidence. See – you really did need to write this recipe out – for at least one person.
Ainsley Daschofsky says
Have you ever tried baking eggs? They turn out perfect and I make them all the time for ease. The shell comes off really well too. I tend to do double sided spiced eggs that have nut butter and cinnamon on one side and paprika and salt on the other side.
predominantlypaleo says
I have baked them! Also a great option!
Allison says
Hey Jen,
I use the Aussie version of Instant Pot – I don’t think there’s a manual button, so can you tell me, is this 8 minutes on high pressure or some other setting? Does my Q make sense?! Hope so 🙂
predominantlypaleo says
Yes, high pressure will do the trick!
Karen says
The manual button is another name for pressure cook.
Sue says
??? I have same question my IP doesn’t have manual
predominantlypaleo says
High pressure 6-8 minutes
Ellie says
My IP also doesn’t have a manual button
predominantlypaleo says
Press the “pressure cook” button
Angela says
Just got my instant pot delivered late yesterday and have already used four times. This morning eggs! So easy to use, thank you for all the great recipes I can’t wait to try
predominantlypaleo says
Wow! You are on fire!
Renee says
I just made these, they are perfect! So easy, it’s crazy! Thanks for the directions!
predominantlypaleo says
So happy to hear!!
Carolyn says
Oh man this is fantastic! Peeled like a dream!! This was the fastest and easiest my deviled eggs have come together! Plus they looked pretty too ? I won’t cook hard boiled eggs any other way now ? Thank you for posting this!!
predominantlypaleo says
Awesome!! I love this method too, the easier the better in my book!
Jennie says
I followed your instructions and it worked like a charm. For mine the yolks became really hard. Still edible but it took a sharp knife and a little umph to break them up.
predominantlypaleo says
The size of the eggs might make a difference too (yolk size included). I haven’t experienced the hard yolks issue yet but maybe you could reduce the time and transfer them to cold water afterwards right away.
Tracey says
Oh. My. God. You have changed my life. I love hard boiled eggs but never get them right. As you promised not only was this fast, but the shells peeled right off! I’ve had my Instant Pot for 3 days and am loving it (and you’re site, which I found on Pinterest.) Keep up the great work!
predominantlypaleo says
I love easy!
Loretta says
My instapot didn’t come with a steam basket. Think I can just use the rack that came with it?
predominantlypaleo says
Yes the rack works!
Patti says
My Instant Pot didn’t come with a steam basket or a rack! What can I do?
predominantlypaleo says
Something like this might help!!! http://amzn.to/2qrE8Pi
JenZ says
These were perfect. Thank you, thank you!!!!
julie says
How long does the cooker take to get to full pressure before cooking the eggs?
predominantlypaleo says
I forget exactly it may be in the IP manual but I sort of just set it up and forget it until it beeps at me!
Kaija says
I have the Lux version, which does not have the low pressure setting. I steam eggs for 10 minutes and they come out perfect.
Vince Lentz says
Wow I have never made eggs that peel easier. My wife couldn’t believe how easy these eggs came out.. thank you so much. I have been having so much fun with this instant pot.
predominantlypaleo says
Great Vince!
Veronica says
Thanks for the instructions for hardboiled eggs. Mine turned out “softboiled” … delicious! I realized that my eggs are the JUMBO eggs that Trader Joe’s carries and I probably should have added a minute. What do you think?
predominantlypaleo says
I would think that would work perfectly! Let me know if it does!
Tina says
I was a little disappointed that the warm-up time made it take 18 minutes, but they came out so perfect that I forgave it. I was even able to use my egg mold to make them into a little chick. I never got it to work before. So cute!
predominantlypaleo says
I like to toss them in and forget about them – do other things and then all the sudden I’ve got perfect eggs! So glad you got your chickies to work out!
Jackie says
It warms up faster if you add very hot water (or boiling). I just use whatever comes out hottest from the tap. Best tip I ever learned!
Julie says
Do you have to put the eggs in on one layer on top of the steamer basket or can I stack them on top of the steamer basket?
I have a 4 quart electric pressure cooker so only 6 fit on a single layer.
predominantlypaleo says
You can stack them!
Matt W says
I tried this and few eggs cracked open. Has anyone else seen this?
predominantlypaleo says
I had one egg do this once, I’m not sure why because all the other times they were fine!
Melissa says
I tried it for the first time today. Most cracked but it may be because they were stacked pretty closely together because of the small collendar I used to fit in the pot. Will try to flatten them out next time.
Steve says
I’ve done eggs by this method a few times, but the last time 3 out of 6 eggs cracked, though it never had happened before. Mystery.
predominantlypaleo says
I had that happen a time or two, I think it might have to do with the age of the eggs? But I cannot say for sure and have not had them consistently crack on me.
Susan says
The eggs were awesome! The yolk was a beautiful lemon yellow in color – no green ring – and felt velvety smooth in my mouth. So tender. They peeled like a dream. I will never cook my eggs any other way. This was even better than the egg steamer I bought a few years back. I cooked my eggs for 6 minutes on low pressure in the IP DUO 60. Thanks so much!
predominantlypaleo says
Yay! Yum!
Lauri Barnes says
Eight minutes is too long. I did mine for five minutes and they were perfect-yellow yolk with just the tiniest hint of green on the outside. Any longer they would have been way overdone. I used jumbo eggs.
predominantlypaleo says
I’m glad you found your magic number. Eight minutes is not too long, however, I’ve done it this way for a year and they are always perfect as indicated by the video tutorial I filmed.
Katie says
Immediately put your eggs in cold water when done. Usually keeps the green at bay
Kathy A says
Did you use cold eggs straight from the fridge, or room temp?
predominantlypaleo says
These were cold eggs.
Judy LaBine says
We are trying the eggs right now. Thank you for the easy directions!
predominantlypaleo says
Yay!!!
Annika says
Do fresh eggs work? As in, fresh laid that day? 🙂
predominantlypaleo says
Ooooh I haven’t tried!
Jennifer B says
OMG!!! These eggs were PERFECT…Easy to peel, soft but yolk not runny, PERFECT. Can’t wait to go get more eggs so I can fix more!!
Niamh says
Seriously the best way to make hard boiled eggs and super easy to peel! Love my new Instant Pot and I’ve preordered your cookbook! Thanks!!
predominantlypaleo says
Thanks so much Niamh!
Karla Ash says
Love it! The eggs were perfect and peeled so easy. This is going to be the only way I hard boil eggs from now on.
predominantlypaleo says
Fantastic!
Jay says
Perfection! Easy quick and I did nearly two dozen eggs at once! Thank you!
Gina Jackson says
So can you explain why you would do manual pressure versus steam. I’m always confused by which to use?
predominantlypaleo says
The steam feature is an automatic high pressure for 10 minutes. If you choose manual you can select high or low pressure and you can choose how long to cook for. You can also change the time on the steam feature but the default is 10 minutes. Does that help?
ht911nurse says
I put them on for 10 minutes and they sat an additional 5 minutes after venting. Many of them were cracked open. I should have followed your recommendation of 8 minutes. *Sigh*
phxyvr says
I tried recipe today with the Instant Pot using 10 white eggs. After peeling I found that all of the egg white had turned brown. The eggs were not cracked. It was so disgusting looking (not at all white like they should be) I threw them out. Any ideas what happened? They were fresh, cage free eggs, grain fed.
predominantlypaleo says
That’s so weird! I actually haven’t heard of that happening! I wish I had an answer for you, but I am clueless. So sorry, I hope you find an answer!
Debra says
My first time at pressure boiling the eggs turned out perfect. This batch, the whites are a definite, light brown! Is it because I used brown shelled eggs? The first batch I made was with white shelled eggs, (did a full dozen) the second batch was 18 brown shelled eggs. They TASTE fine, but not pretty to look at nor is the appearance appetizing.
predominantlypaleo says
The shell may play a role I’ve experienced, some shells are softer/thinner than others.
Holly Thiel says
I just had this exact same thing happen – has anyone discovered the reason for this?
Stacy says
Jennifer, you became my new favorite person today! I’ve been trying to do some low carb days and I love to have deviled eggs. I made some the other night using the stove method and it was (as usual) such a pain in the butt. Plus the peeling process is always a nightmare. I’d read somewhere about people using their Instant Pot for hard boiling eggs so I googled it and found your site. I sadly under utilize my Instant Pot but at least I have it when I need it.
I followed your directions and they came out perfectly! And it was so easy! I work from home so I just set it up and left it and when I could get back to the kitchen, took them out and dunked them in ice water. No worrying about boiling water, then covering and setting a timer, etc.
And the peeling – OMG it was indeed a snap! I peeled 6 eggs in probably less than half the time it would take me to peel ONE egg from my usual way. And the eggs taste great!
I’ll definitely be browsing through your site for other recipes! Thanks again for helping fix such a big cooking frustration!
predominantlypaleo says
Yay! Thanks Stacy!!!!
Darlene Hill says
Am I the worst cook in the world? I tried this, and the whites turned out light tan like the time I was just boiling them and forgot them on the stove for about an hour.
predominantlypaleo says
Oh how weird! I’ve never experienced that before???
Heidi Straub says
Thank you for posting this “recipe”. I’ve had my instant pot for a year now and I’m just trying to make hard boiled eggs in it. They peel like a dream. I love not having to watch the pot for it to start boiling. They turned out great with using the wire rack that came with the instant pot. This is going to be my new method going forward.
predominantlypaleo says
Wonderful!!!
Trish S says
I have an IP duo and can’t find a manual button. I do have a steam button. Would I press that and set for 8 minutes? Just trying to get used to my pot.
predominantlypaleo says
You can press the “Pressure Cook” button and that is the same as manual.
Connie Rudd says
I have a new IP. Want to make egg bites using the silicone basket. What settings on the Duo mini?
Dee says
Do you peel yours before/after you put in the fridge?
Kelly Guncheon says
How long do you let the eggs rest before you let out the steam?
