fun friday: bacon wrapped hot dogs on a stick

June 7, 2013 by predominantlypaleo 6 Comments

by friday evenings, i am admittedly a little lazier in the kitchen.  for awhile we did friday pizza night and splurged on gluten free pizzas – either homemade or delivered. however, in trying to phase dairy out of the house, i realized we needed another fun friday meal. voila! serve with my simply sweet potato chips or your favorite side.

ingredients:

  • organic grass fed hot dogs like applegate farms
  • organic nitrate free bacon
  • optional: 100% organic maple sugar
  • paper lollipop sticks (i used 8 inch)
  1. preheat oven to 375
  2. wrap uncooked hot dogs in one slice of bacon each
  3. place on cookie sheet (without sticks)
  4. sprinkle with maple sugar
  5. cook for 15-20 min, flipping once (cooking times may vary)
  6. remove from oven once bacon is crispy
  7. allow to cool slightly and then guide lollipop stick into the center of each hot dog
  8. serve with my honey mustard

The last time I tried to make cheese stuffed, bacon wrapped hot dogs I nearly set my oven on fire because of the splattering bacon grease! Any recommendations as to how I can cook them without making such a mess of my oven?
Have you ever tried pan frying these? I couldn’t do that with cheese but leaving out the cheese maybe they can be pan fried (no oil needed of course) then poke in the stick. What do you think?

That’s so interesting Brenda! I actually didn’t have any splattering that I could tell, I wonder why? Maybe you could cover them with foil until the very end and then do a quick broil to crisp the bacon?

About

Jennifer is a wife and mother of 3 in pursuit of better health for her family.
After being gluten free for 4 years, and having a multitude of chronic health issues, she realized there was still too much processed “food” in her pantry and change was needed. Jennifer began feeding her family more meals from WHOLE foods and less from boxes. Her recipes are predominantly paleo, meaning they are free of grain, gluten, dairy, and refined sugar, but make allowances for a few treats and sweets. She believes food can be medicine when used appropriately and that a few changes now can equate to huge benefits later. Healthy food does not need to be flavorless and void of personality, which she aims to accomplish through her many recipes.
